On November 19th, GIS Day 2008 in Kern County was once again a successful event. Held at the California State University, Bakersfield, Student Union, this year’s theme was “GIS…enhancing geographic literacy one electronic map at a time.

With economies struggling worldwide, the event highlighted how essential it is for GIS professionals to sharpen their skills to assist organizations in making wise and efficient decisions.

This years event included several presentations in both the large multipurpose room and in a smaller conference room.

Presentations included open source GIS applications, AutoCAD applications, and specific subject matter such as BLM and Processes through GIS and ID modeling.

In the afternoon, a panel discussion included several local GIS professionals who answered a wide variety of questions and provided insight into their day-to-day uses of GIS.

A highlight of the day was UC Riverside Professor of Sociology Dr. Robert Nash Parker, who gave a great presentation on using GIS in the field of sociology.
