Cartography and Map Design Workshops
September 20th and 22nd, 2011
The Central California chapter of URISA strives to bring quality training and relationship building opportunities to its’ members and GIS professionals in Kern, Kings, Tulare, Fresno, Madera, Stanislaus, Merced, San Joaquin, Inyo, San Luis Obispo and the Gold Country areas. This month the chapter is hosting a URISA Certified Workshop: Cartography and Map Design. The class is being taught in both Bakersfield and San Luis Obispo. The newly updated course is being taught by Patrick Jankanish. Patrick Jankanish has been designing and creating maps professionally for more than 30 years. A graduate of the University of Washington Geography Department, Mr. Jankanish began his career at the University of Washington Cartographic Laboratory before joining a small start-up cartography firm in Seattle that eventually handled custom mapmaking and GIS projects for federal, state, and local government clients as well as numerous large and small private clients from a broad range of industries. Following many years as a freelance cartographer, designer, and technical writer, Mr. Jankanish joined the diverse staff of the King County GIS Center in Seattle where, as a Senior Cartographer and GIS Analyst, he continues to design and create maps for print and ever-evolving digital media for internal county agency clients as well as a broad range of public and private clients outside of King County government. Join us as we learn to create maps that effectively deliver their intended message, are representationally accurate and visually clear.

I learned so much in this class! The instructor shared a vast amount of cartography knowledge. He included everyone in discussion and broke the day up with exercises and map critiques. The huge booklet will also be a great reference for me. I think my maps will rise to the next level with all I have learned! Thank you, Mr. Jankanish!
It was also good to see so many of my GIS colleagues!
